ScuttlePuck Episode 17: Oilers, Habs Preseason Games, Lightning Thirds, Goalie Analytics by Hockey Abstract, Johansen Update

Pete likes Tampa Bay Lightning‘s new thirds but Mike, not so much.  Mike goes in-depth on goaltender analytics and how they show who is better, Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers or Boston BruinsTuukka Rask.  Also what they say about Marc Andre Fleury of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

We each discuss our favourite teams, the Montreal Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers and who looks good so far. ScuttlepuckLogo_sml

The Ryan Johansen contract hasn’t changed, other than the agent’s demands and we give our take on Gary Bettman‘s latest musings on expansion into Toronto.

ScuttlePuck Episode 16: Ads on NHL Sweaters? UGGGH!!! Habs Goalie situation. Johansen Contract.

Pete is back and it’s great!  Together we’re ecstatic to have some real hockey news to talk about, with National Hockey League training camps opening.  We discuss the ridiculous media attention the Toronto Maple Leafs get.  So much so, that one comment in a coaching clinic from 2 months ago becomes the headline on the day camp opens!

We discuss the Habs goaltending trio of Carey Price, Dustin Tokarski and Peter Budaj and make a guess at who will be Price’s backup to start the season.

Two great Finns made the podcast as Saku Koivu of the Montreal Canadiens and Anaheim Ducks retired – Pete and Mike look back on his career.  And Teemu Selanne releases his new book and tells of a heated argument with Bruce Boudreau.

With ads on NHL sweaters being in the news this week, Mike goes on an epic rant against the idea.  And then gets all warm and fuzzy when discussing the Pittsburgh Penguins new third jerseys. e

John Davidson was all over the media this week dishing the dirt on his contract negotiations with Columbus Blue Jackets forward Ryan Johansen.  We discuss what Davidson said, and why we think he said it.

All in all, this was some our best work, so give us a listen.

ScuttlePuck Episode 15: Special Guest Thomas Krulikowski from whyhockey podcast

Mike chats with the host of the whyhockey periodical podcast, Thomas Krulikowski (@tommykru06) from Glenmore PA.  Thomas talks about his minor hockey days in Pennsylvania, growing up a Flyers fan and why he has become a Florida Panthers fan.

Together we talk about the NHL’s new rule changes and why the trapezoid rule should be named after goaltending legend Dominic Hasek.  There are some interesting thoughts on the NHL’s attempt to extend accountability for player actions to coaches – will this lead to owner fines at some point down the road?

Mike digs into the Hockey Abstract for some preseason predictions on the Edmonton Oilers, Florida Panthers and Philadelphia Flyers.

Due to schedule constraints, Pete couldn’t join this podcast, but will return for Episode 16.

ScuttlePuck Episode 14: Best and Worst NHL Sweaters, Krejci and Schultz Sign

In this episode, Pete and Mike get quite animated while discussing which NHL sweaters are there all time favourite.  The usual suspects are in the mix, – Chicago Blackhawks, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers – but you are certain to be surprised by Pete’s off the board selection for all time favourite.

The Boston Bruins signed David Krejci to a long term deal and the Oilers signed Justin Schultz to a one year deal. We discuss both and give our opinions on whether they are the right moves for the respective teams.ScuttlepuckLogo_sml

It was like Christmas morning for Mike as his Corsi Hockey League T shirt, commissioned by the Hot Takery (@hottakery) website and his copy of The Hockey Abstract by Rob Vollman @robvollmanNHL, Tom Awad and Iain Fyffe @IainFyffe arrived.  The book is an amazing compilation of essays on how to apply statistics to different hockey questions.  We discuss some of the ones that caught the eye on a perusal of the table of contents.

We also announce an exciting addition to an upcoming podcast.

ScuttlePuck Episode 13: NHL Expansion talk, Senators sign Anderson, New Blues Sweaters

In this Episode, Pete and I discuss the latest NHL expansion news.  Will the league expand to 34 teams with franchises in Las Vegas, Seattle, Toronto and Quebec?  How would that make sense? We discuss the Craig Anderson signing in Ottawa and what that means for Robin Lehner.  ScuttlepuckLogo_sml

The goaltending situation in Anaheim has changed drastically and we ponder what this could mean for the Ducks season.

The St. Louis Blues unveiled their new (old) sweaters and we discuss this in detail and ask the listeners to let us know their favourite and least favourite NHL sweaters.
